    Hey dude 👋 need your opinion, so I'm worried about plagiarism I'm not actively doing it but I read alot and some of sentences just stuck with me ,and the structure so the line is; the first thing he saw was xyz but the next xyz would this be plagiarism?.(An author I read uses this structure often)

    • @KierenWestwoodWriting
      @KierenWestwoodWriting День тому

      Heck no! Not in my opinion anyway, the odd similar phrase is inevitable in writing. I thing plagiarism in fiction only becomes a real problem when entire stories are copied and rewritten or whole concepts are stolen. A line inspired by another writer shouldn’t get you trouble I don’t think.

    Writers can learn so much from each other. Channels like Ray and others care about other writers. When you hit a wall that is writers block it can seem to last longer than we care to admit. When I had doughs it helped to stop writing and read more and come back another time. This could be weeks months. If writers block is haunting you, I try to think of new ideas for my next novel. During the time of being absent from writing my novels, I came up with a new idea for a new book, so long as your always writing and creating its a good day. When I write its like a film being played out in my head. Its interesting how you really cant teach prose, it just comes out of your head. If your a pantser, I found it stopped me writing, so I became and outliner and started writing again. so now writing day to day I fly between the two when the writing is going good I find its more freeing to be both

    3:01 This is what so many modern fiction writers are missing. They merely type (as mentioned previously) and make short sentences that are supposedly more “digestible,” but rarely make anything beautiful. Do not fret the length of a sentence, it can be looked over with proper grammar and true, coherent beauty!

    "Maybe I'm starting to defrost like a Christmas turkey"... Great videos, I took some notes cos I found your intuitions interesting. Well, about the last simile you mentioned the thing is that dead fish degrades and its aspect becomes uglier and more disgusting in a shorter amount of time compared with the natural decaying process of the human body once it's dead; probably Dickens' aim here is also to highlight the egoism and avidity of Marley's character, in the sense that his misery as a human attached to money may look like a bad lobster in a dark cellar (the cellar being a sort of soul's prison, such as money and lust for collecting it).

      It all depends on what you’re writing and your style and such. I tend to get characters in as soon as possible so readers have someone to follow along, but all the building blocks of writing are important in their own way. I’d say write your beginning the best you can for now and move on to the rest of the story, you can always change it later!

    My current work is a broken piano that I've caught instead of dodging, when it came through the roof behind me, so I could work up some muscles trying to lift it. I'm pretty sure the internal mechanisms don't work and can't be repaired, but I'm polishing the outside up anyway, for practice. When it's done, I'll put it in the corner on display, and as long as no one tries to actually play it, it'll probably look decent enough. For a first novel anyway. :) And you're right - I might discover the right tools to fix the inside of it one day. You never know. But it's ok if I don't. I'll be better at polishing the next thing, either way.

    16:19 George RRMartin categorises writers as architects and gardeners. He says both approached are fine if they work for people, but he considers himself a gardener. I'm not sure if I agree with the short story one. He assumes shorts are easier. They're not. Novels leave more room for mistakes and being longwinded. Shorts require IMMENSE self-discipline, being economic with wording, leaving out 99% of your precious lore, cutting out scenes that don't further the plot while novels allow for subplots, digressions. It is a great practice for novels though but more like a trial of fire rather than walking through warm water to prepare you for walking on coals.

  • @AntipaladinPedigri
    @AntipaladinPedigri 16 днів тому

    1. Agree if it's boring weather. Like "it was raining. There were clouds on the sky". But I writer horror, atmosphere is key. And I make sure the sunset/sunrise, night or weather descriptions are fresh, creative, funny, with captivating metaphors. And I've been publishes 29 times, so people rather like them. But they're short, like a 5-7 line paragraph max and it introduces characters in a in medias res situation. 2. The prologue problem is that people infodump their lore im them. They lecture the reader and it goes on for many, many pages. So readers skip them. It ruins the hook of the story. 3. The advice was against going through the tags with a thesaurus and using "he ejaculated" or "she gurgled" just for the sake of avoiding repetition and sounding smart. No hatm in using screamed when the situation is emotional and calls for screaming. 5. If everything is emphasized with an exclamation mark, then nothing is emphasized. It's just characters with no indoor voice. I think it's fine to pick the most emotional sentence in a dialogue line and put it there. But yeah, it is jarring when you put an ex-mark at the end of epiphanies that are just banal to the reader like "there are muddy footprints! Someone must've come from the inside!" It sounds like the author being in love with their genius. 8 and 9. Same as no 1. Boeing descriptions, agree. But picking specific details can tell a lot about the character. The character's room can tell a lot about what the char is as a person. And again the point is for it to be fresh, creative, with funny, captivating metaphors ir observations. Not - "there was a wardrobe and a chair. A mirror hung on the wall. The floor was made od oak planks."

    The beginning has always been the hardest part for me. I used to write so much when I was in my twenties but that has slowed down so much now. I worry I've forgotten how to write, how to describe a scene and I'm so mad at myself for having so many ideas in my head and never getting them all down on paper. I am going to try to use your video as a way of challenging myself to actually get started. Even if I hate it, even if it kills me because it isn't perfect, I'm going for it. I will be back in a month or so and I'll let you know how it went...
